How to read your baby name analysis
Every name analysis returned by the calculator includes four signals you can use to make a confident naming decision:
- 2026 rank. Where the name sits inside the 200 most-given baby names across the US, England & Wales, and Scotland. A low number means many parents are picking it. A high number means it’s quietly rising or already distinctive.
- Popularity score. A quick 1-to-100 readout. Above 90 = extremely popular (think Olivia, Noah). Between 50–90 = solidly mainstream. Below 50 = still trending, but uncommon enough to feel personal.
- Origin and meaning. The linguistic roots and the most widely accepted meaning of the name, drawn from established naming references.
- Similar names. Five names from the same category, origin, or popularity bracket: a great way to widen the shortlist without losing the vibe you like.
Frequently asked questions
How does the baby name popularity calculator work?
Type any baby name. The calculator matches it against the 2026 top 200 ranking compiled from SSA (USA), ONS (England & Wales), and NRS (Scotland) data, then returns rank, origin, meaning, popularity score, and similar names, all in one click.
What data does the name popularity calculator use?
Official 2024 birth registration data from the Social Security Administration (USA), the Office for National Statistics (England & Wales), and National Records of Scotland. We combine and re-rank these sources to produce the 2026 top 200.
How is the popularity score calculated?
The score is derived from the name’s rank inside the tracked top 200: rank #1 scores close to 100/100, rank #200 scores close to 1/100. Names outside the top 200 are considered distinctive and fall outside the score.
What does it mean if my name isn’t in the calculator?
It means the name sits outside the official 2026 top 200 for the US, England & Wales, and Scotland: a good signal that it’s relatively unique. Explore our 60+ distinctive baby name picks for further inspiration.
